When the 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated Japan, Megan Nochi knew she wanted to help. She also realized that X-Files fans across the globe would want to be involved. Thus began the idea that developed into “X-Philes for Japan.”

The fundraising effort quickly got started with Nochi reaching out to other X-Files websites, forums, and fans and organizing giving through the Japan NGO Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund. A stay-at-home fundraiser was next, with fans donating money while joining in an X-Files viewing party. In Australia, a mock shopping spree was organized where fans “bought” items from the show, such as Mulder’s Alien Autopsy video. The piece de resistance came about with the notion of a worldwide fundraiser that would appeal to many. And with that, Nochi drew on her Japanese heritage and began to create cranes to auction for charity.

Cranes are an ancient Japanese symbol from a legend which promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. Nochi created cranes that were works of art for cast and crew of The X-Files to sign.

David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Robert Patrick, Annabeth Gish, Chris Carter, Frank Spotnitz, Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Sheila Larken, R.W. Goodwin, Dean Haglund, Bruce Harwood, and Tom Braidwood autographed cranes to be auctioned.

After an eBay auction, the cranes raised over $1300 to benefit the rebuilding of Japan. Kudos to Megan Nochi, a real life hero!
