During the height of its popularity, the show got nearly 20 million viewers (according to the Wiki entry, found here. Yet today, the top genre shows don't even get half that. Shoot, Fringe and the massive popular Game of Thrones barely get 1/7th of the total numbers, and the top-rated genre show (Once Upon a Time) gets less than half! And it would beat even the top shows (which has been American Idol for years, according to the Wiki for the Nielsens themselves).
Now I know that this is only a depiction of U.S. homes, and doesn't really show worldwide impact. And there are far more things on cable nowadays (not to mention Netflix, Amazon Prime, the internet, and all the other things people use instead of TV).
Still, that's pretty impressive! Our show at its height garnered nearly 20 million viewers, while it's been over a decade since even the top show has got that many people watching!
