Favorite Informant

Postby PurityControl » November 27th, 2010, 1:02 am

Hey everyone!
Who is your favorite informant in the show?? I'm curious.

Mine is X. He was always so badass. I love how he just uses Mulder to get what he needs. And he'll shoot anyone, anywhere. So don't #*%@ with him. His weird Batman like signal was hilariously awesome too.

Least favorite...well that Knowel idiot by default.

Deep Throat, no doubt about it. Not only is he my favorite informant, he's also one of my all-time favorite characters.

Oohh, nice topic!

X is mine as well. He was so unpredictable, had his own agenda, almost crazy...he'd given up everything for his cause.
I've seen life on this planet Scully, and that is exactly why I am looking elsewhere.

Hmm, tough one, I like Deep Throat and X but , leaning to X more. Like Maurisa said, he was always very unpredictable.

My favorite is Marita Covarrubias; I liked how she believed in Mulder and the look on her face and the sound of her voice as she gave information to Mulder

Deep Throat for me too, especially as he's named after the Watergate informant, but actually sounds like a porn star name, which obviously Mulder would like!!! drool] :lf

Thanks for rescussitating this, Truth!

I'm stuck between X & Deep Throat - X defo wins on the cool factor, but DT wins on the info he divulged and his marvelous, portentous verbal delivery.

Marita wasn't in the same league. The sometimes porn-like quality of her diction made me think of an SNL skit, & made it hard to take her seriously....

It's hard to chose between Deep Throat and X but I think I'll go for Mr.X.
I always liked how X used Mulder for his own interests but in the same time he helped Mulder with informations.He was a mysterious character,I always liked the way he was introduced.I always loved the scene when X fought with Skinner in the elevator,it was fun.Deep Throat would never make this but X yes! {x}

Good points about X, AgentDana!

Something I hadn't really considered before was how dark and mysterious and shadowy the meetings were, pre-Marita. In those first few years the tone of each secret rendezvous Mulder made was quite different. He would sometimes meet Deep Throat in a public place (like a bar) or out in the open (in the sun), but with X the meetings were usually alone and in the dark. They went with a different feel when they got to Marita, and it was never quite the same again (and I like Marita, too!).

Deep Throat. You want to trust him, to believe he's on the level. For the most part, I think he is (been a while since ss1, though).

I like the way they played X, he brought some serious intensity to the show. I knew Deep Throat first, though, sorry X. Marita was...eh. They could have done more with that, I think. She could have been a weak spot for Mulder, a wedge between him and Scully if they had played it right.

I feel the same way about Deep Throat when I saw him for the first time something made me to trust him.

About X,I liked how he played with Mulder for his own good but I could never trust that man.For me,X (even if he still my favorite informant) wasn't a man to trust,he was a man who choosed to play along with Mulder to can get informations.

I agree with you, they could have made something better with Marita. She could have been used to separe Mulder from Scully. You have some great ideas and you opened my mind to other possibilities.

Marita never really struck a chord with me. She was too ambivalent, without X's sense of self-preservation or the good ol' boy honest face of Deep Throat. In short - she wasn't sneaky or dangerous enough, lol.

A female informant could have been really cool. IIRC, Mulder wasn't deeply, emotionally involved with Scully yet when Marita was introduced. We all saw how Scully reacted to Phoebe, though, and Marita could have been played like that. Creating division between Mulder/Scully would have somewhat removed Scully's scientific backup from Mulder's crackpot theories, reduced Mulder's credibility, and seriously messed with the partnership. Mulder could have kept yelling that the sky was falling, and much to the Syndicate's relief, people would go back to ignoring him. You can ignore crackpot theories, but science is a little harder to pass up.

You have some good points here,TuffSpot.
Marita wasn't dangerous enough and that made not a interesting informant. It would have been better if Marita has some of X's character to be dangerous and a part of Deep Throat's honesty. That would have made her a more better character.

The reaction of Scully when Phoebe Green appeared was a clear jealousy fact. She tried to hide her hater and dislike in front of Phoebe but it didn't work too good.I'm sure that if Marita tried a bit more to gain Mulder's trust and attention they would probably develop a unprofessional relationship and she could have used him and the information he had from inside the FBI.

Those are interesting observations, and it's fun to imagine the "what if?"s.

I think the producers realized that they weren't getting the right tension and mystery out of Marita, which is probably why they had her in league with Krycek later on.

Isn't it strange to realize that she was the informant that lasted the longest on the show?

Good remark,TheTruthIsOutThere!

She lasted until the show has ended.Marita was the informant with the less mysterious side but she lasted the most.We could see her even at Mulder's trial in "The Truth".

X by far. For me only Krycek compares to the level of intensity and excitement he brought to each scene he was in. So amazing it would've been to have those two characters in a scene together.

I actually prefer Marita to Deep Throat (though only the Marita from season 4 and 5, since imo the writers let her character fizzle out after that). Found it refreshing to have a female voice in the mythology and I'll admit to finding that voice, among other things, more attractive than Deep Throat's. So maybe it just comes down to my superficiality, but to me she was a more dynamic character with more interesting potential.

When DT died, it felt to me like his time had come, he'd served his purpose, whereas I think the writers missed a lot of opportunities with X and Marita.

I probably prefer X, he generally made me ask the most questions. Plus how cool he was is in 'Unusual Suspects', when he purposely rolled down the car window as he drove past the Lone Gunmen.

So gangster, ahaa.

I agree with you Falco!
X had a gangsta character and the way he rolled down the window in "Unusual Suspects" was the total gangsta reaction. When I saw for the first time that scene I was so surprised to see that X was kidnapped.I had a reaction like,"What? X was a kidnapper?!"
Anyway I always loved X's shadow character.He was the most interesting informant. {x}

TuffSpot, you make some excellent points about Marita Covarrubias, and missed opportunities for her character. I did like her, but she wasn't like X at all. I think that she might have been more interesting if she had had a personality more like, say, Esther Nairn from, "Kill Switch."

Nevertheless, Marita is still alive, so we might see her as Mulder's informant in, "The X Files 3," if that film is ever made.
