improbable, thank you for posting a new 'What's the Magic Number?' puzzle. However, in this game, it seems that when each component of the sum is difficult, people just don't play the puzzle, and the game sits unanswered for a long time. Now, maybe somebody knows the answers to all of your components, or is at least willing to do the research to find the answers. I think that we all know that the last word on "The X Files" TV series was, "hope," which is 4 letters, but the other components might prove to be too difficult. Just a suggestion: you could either wait a few days to see whether someone is able to answer the other components, and then solve the sum, or you could post easier components. :)

Welcome to one of the tougher games, Improbable!

First component = 5 episodes PLUS
Second = ??? so... I'll guess 3 TIMES
Third per LondonLady = 4 (hope)

THEN - 5 + 3 = 8 x 4 = 32?

Anyone more certain of the 2nd question??

I agree this is one of the tougher games on the Forum, I don't even play, I think improbable broke down the questions very methodically and it may take some research to find the answers. This game does seem to require some research, where most of the other games can be guesses off the top of our heads. Plus you need to be a little math geek. LOL

As someone who loathed math - it's really not the math that's scary for me -

These are more like advanced trivia (level 2) WITH the twist of converting the alpha answer to a numeric.

For me, research is a given. But for example, researching the tagline change would probably take me a half hour, so I guessed. Whereas Luv and scully_hair could answer correctly, with one eye closed...

1. Albert Hosteen appeared in more than 5 episodes. You're very close though.

2. Hint: The tagline changed more than 10 times prior to the first movie.

3. Correct.

2. No way! I didn't realise that the tagline changed so often. Pure guess: 13 times?

1. Correct

2. Good guess, but the actual number is a bit smaller.

Post-puzzle-resolution favor? Please list your sources? London Lady and I started a "mission" mid 2011 to nail down true answers when different sources diverge. For example Floyd Crow ... on IMDb is listed as appearing 5 times, but their data is as good or bad as the person / agent (?) doing the actor's data entry. In today's InterWebs, Users are the Beta Testers, so it's literally up to anyone who cares to attempt to correct erroneous data. If it's one of "Carter's Conundrums," that of course isn't worth resolving....

Okay, now that we know the correct answers for each component, the sum is:

6 + 11 = 17 x 4 = 68. The Magic Number is therefore 68. I think that this round was a collaborative effort by both Agent Skulder and I. :bear

improbable, here is a more typical example of the components for this game. Also, as per the moderators, when replying to the post directly above, there is no need to use the Quotes feature, unless you only want to quote part of the post. To reply to the entire post, it's unnecessary to use the Quotes feature because it's obvious to which post you are replying, and doing so uses unnecessary bandwidth. thank]

Here is the next Magic Number puzzle :) :

Would someone else like to take his turn for him? Agent Skulder, or anyone else?

Based on this game's history, I think this should Rest In Peace, temporarily at least. Why? It's more work than enjoyment which is a major buzzkill in "games."

Maybe when our crickets leave, someone can revive it...

That is your opinion, Agent Skulder, and you are entitled to it. However, as with any game, you can choose not to play it. Nevertheless, just in case anyone else wants to play this game, here is the next puzzle. If it sits unanswered for a whole year, so be it. LOL! :sun

Here's an easy puzzle: What's the Magic Number?

The number of letters in Scully's daughter's name +
the missing number in the episode, "__ 31" x
(multiplied by) the missing number, "You're my one in ______ billion," -
The number of Lone Gunmen = ?

Emily (5 letters)

5 billion

5 + 7 = 12
12 x 5 = 60
60 - 3 = 57

Answer = 57

See, that could be a matter of opinion.
I asked everyone here in my office what would be their first response if I said, "What's the first day of the week." and the ALL said Monday.
I know that technically, and in some religions, Saturday is considered the first day of the week though, so I'm assuming THAT is what you are considering the first day of the week.
So I'm guessing Monday would be the third day of the week...
But Sunday could also be the first day...so Monday would be the second day...

ETA: Well, wikipedia has graphs showing Saturday as the first day, Sunday as the first day and Monday as the first day sooooo.... now I really don't know. LOL!

Wikipedia is wrong. Look on any calendar! What is the first day of the week on the calendar? It's not a matter of opinion: all the calendars in the western world list the same day of the week as the first day! I don't know how your colleagues could all make the same mistake, when I'm sure that you have at least one calendar in your office!

I'm not about to tell anyone that they are wrong about a day of the week, especially when it may be based on a religious belief! My upbringing taught me that The Bible says that Sunday marks the last day of the week! Therefore Monday would be the first day of the week!

You could have simply said "first calendar day".

That all said. I'm guessing the answer you were seeking was ... 34?

I did not say to go and tell your colleagues that they are wrong, did I? For goodness sake, this is just a game. When I said, "The number of the day of the week," I assumed that the logical thing to do would be to look on a calendar if one was uncertain of the answer.

34 is still the incorrect answer.

BTW, where in The Bible does it say that Sunday is the last day of the week? The Sabbath day is Saturday, which I think is the last day of the week; the day of rest. That would make Sunday the first day of the week. Anyway, I wasn't going by The Bible, but by the western calendar, because I think that most XFUers have access to one.

I didn't say that I believed whay my upbringing taught me, I was using that as an example because it is what many people do believe, as I understand that many people believe that Saturday is the day of rest.
Everyone can believe what they want, even if they believe The Bible is just a book written by men.

And damg it! I subtracted instead of adding, didn't I? Oops!

Yes - finally.

BTW, I happen to believe that The Bible is inspired by God, and is more factual than metaphorical.

Nevertheless, that still doesn't change what a calendar says.

I can't believe I subtracted instead of adding, and me looking right at it!! LOL!!

Many people DO believe that.

And no, it doesn't. And it still doesn't change my feelings that there could be more than one answer to that question. ;) Nevetheless, it is not what you MEANT, and I have to go by what YOU meant.

Here's the next one. Also, everyone else is welcome to join in this game. It's not just for luv and I! In fact, luv, if you don't mind, could you wait a day or so to see whether anyone else wants to play, before answering this puzzle?

What's the Magic Number?

The quarter of the (American football?) game that Luther Lee Boggs watched after killing his family on Thanksgiving (that is, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th quarter) +

Scully's apartment number as shown in, "Beyond the Sea" x

The number of times that we saw Luther Lee Boggs about to be executed -

The number of letters in the first word of the title of the song played at Scully's father's funeral =

Yes, everyone, I just watched, "Beyond the Sea" on BBC America. The episode is still brilliant. I think that it might be the best episode in the first series. I hope that Brad Dourif won an Emmy for his performance. :nwy

Agent Skulder, why don't you go ahead and answer the puzzle yourself? luv2luvduchovny seems to have disappeared for the time being, and the only other people who play this game are you and I! I'm the current host, so, that just leaves you!

Having said that, though, I bet that TruthIsOutThere would be good at this game.
If you see this, Truth, give it a try! :)

I may start researching this later... No answers come to my mind, so if anyone knows these, don't be shy!

Here's a link to Dourif's awards - recognized for Cuckoos Nest & Deadwood (jaw dropping performance here), but nothing for TXF... BTW he has a lot of work currently in post-production. Who says actors can't work past age 50 (née 1950)?

Good for him. He's one of those quietly brilliant actors of our time, like Edward Norton, who I absolutely love as an actor. I just saw, "American History X" again, on telly. It's arguably one of the best films ever made, along with the two, "The X Files" feature films, of course!
