X-Files Books, Novels, & Comics: "MUST HAVE"

Postby Agent Skulder » January 11th, 2011, 7:57 pm

Reading thru the XFU threads, a lot of members talk about their book collections, but not which books they love or refer to the most.  We've all bought books and wondered later why we didn't just hit the Library.

This thread is for all your MUST HAVE books
-"Official X-Files Books" about the series, movies & cast / crew
- The "novelizations" written after the shows and films aired,
- The "original comic books," including the books REISSUED in 2013.

Please include:
- the title and author
- a blurb re what it's about
- whether it pays to get the hardcover or softcover
- where to buy (esp if old)

Once we get a collection of resources, I'll create a list with everything in one place.

Thanks in advance!

First and foremost: Matt Hurwitz's book The Complete X-Files: Behind the Series, the Myths, and the Movies."

Maurisap - do you have the version with the signed artwork? I think currently there's a complete hardcover "set" with artwork, just a hardcover book and a softcover...
(If so - is the artwork what you expected?)

I have a hard cover copy that was signed in LA by Chris Carter and Matt Hurwitz. How about you?

Wow. I hope you keep that behind glass! Were you present when it was signed???
I'm the proud owner of the complete DVD set (still unopened) but no books... No action figures... Never was much of a "collector." But this book sounds like it might be a soon-to-be-keeper!

The teenage books of the epsidoes are brilliant. Short and sweet and well written

#7 -Control by Everett Owens (Pusher) MY FAVE - Brilliant from start to finish as a book (and ep)
# 10 The Host by Les Martin
#8 Dark Matter by Easton Royce (Soft Light)

Would never be with out the Official Epsiode Guides. Unfortunately they only covered seasons 1 to 7 but hey ho...

Season 1 and 2: The Truth is Out There
Season 3: Trust No One
Season 4: I Want To Believe
Season 5: Resist Or Serve
Season 6: The End and The Begining
Season7 - All Things

And also love the 1st book i ever got of the show on my 15th Birthday:

Goblins by Charles L. Grant

A must have for me has to be X Files Confidential by Ted Edwards. It's an unoffical guide covering the first three seasons, with great detail and wonderful comments from the writers, actors and directors. The pictures are in black and white and there are some nice hand drawn pictures from some of the episodes as well, but as an informational resource it's second to none. A must read. The only thing about it is that it only covers seasons one, two and three, I would love to have read more on the following years.

The "Official" guides to the seasons are great to have.
Season 1: The Truth Is Out There
Season 2: Trust No One
Season 3: I Want to Believe
Season 4: Resist or Serve (This always reminds me of a something for Star Trek and the Borg, lol)
Season 5: The End and the Beginning
Season 6: All Things

I don't know why the other three seasons didn't have official guides :(

I have all six official guides and I think they are great. They are guides for the first seven seasons. I was confused at first because I thought, six books means six seasons but the first book (guide) covers two seasons (Seasons 1 and 2).
I'm really upset that the last two seasons don't have official guides.
Here are pics of all six of them:

Sincere Thanks! to everyone for their "best book choices" here... These all appear to be excellent resources to have on hand, so that after watching say Brand X you're scratching your head, you won't have to tape an X to your window for assistance!

Keep those recommendations coming, everyone!

@GillyD - just curious - did your Hurwitz book come with posters? There's one version sold online that's $150 and then there's a softcover (paperback) at a more reasonable price. From what I've read about the books it appears that the more expensive one comes with something. But the write-ups I've seen differ. I don't love the $150 US price but I also don't love go-to books getting beat up when they're soft cover. And THANKS for posting the pics - it helps seeing what they look like in case I can find them in a gently used store where things aren't always displayed in any particular order.

Yes, Agent Skulder, mine came with posters. And there is no softcover for that book. This one I have, the one I posted the pic, costs $33 on Amazon right now. The other one you are reffering to costs almost $155 on Amazon and it is deluxe edition. "Each book comes signed and numbered in an exclusive "black oil" limited edition clamshell and includes two prints of Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) from the show's set."
Here is how the special edition looks like:

I don't remember how much I paid for mine (maybe $35), but it had a different slip cover, no autograph, and it came with a number of posters. It's probably the best book on the show I've ever seen, and I have almost all of them!

The cover for mine didn't fit properly when I first got it, and it was pretty annoying. After about a year of having some other stuff piled on it, though, finally forced it to fit a bit better, basically reshaping it.

Quick question: Is your book by Carter, or just the Forward? If Carter wrote the Forward, is the book by "Hurwitz?"

Check the post in this thread from March 11, 2011 - is that the same book?

Thx... :)
